The First Time I saw a Dead Body

I was 12 going on 13 the first time I saw a dead human body.  I didn't mean to see it, and if it were possible that I could unsee it, I would.  A 12 year old is not meant to see things like that so early in life.  People who are as young as I was should be out, having fun, playing football or tag with their friends.  The only thing was, I had a friend name Eddie Lester.  You see, Eddie was not like most guys his age.  Eddie was not interested in video games, or sports, or basically anything that one would expect a 12 year old boy to be interested in.  The one thing that he was interested in was detective work.  He could not get enough of that type of thing.  He read books, watched true crime documentaries, and spend endless hours researching cases.  Most of the time he would just sit on his laptop and talk to me about the things he researched and how he was going to get to see some of the sites where crimes occurred.  I always thought that was weird.  Who would want to go to a place where a crime took place, and be reminded of the awful thing that happened there?  But that was just how his mind worked.  Like I said, most of the time he would just talk about seeing these places, however, one day he must have gotten a little too curious.  See, what Eddie didn't know was that, people did awful things in these places for a reason.  The places where crimes take place are often secluded, and in dangerous areas.  He was 12 however, so he did not realize this.  One day he told me that he planned to go to a recent crime scene and check it out.  He said it was in a back alley in the outskirts of town.  I told him it was a bad idea, and that he shouldn't go, but he said he was going in the middle of the day, and that he'd be fine, so I trusted him.  The day went by, and I heard nothing from him.  The next day his parents called mine to ask if he was over my house, and just forgot to call.  When my mother told his mother that she didn't know where he was I heard a distorted, panicked voice coming through the phone.  I knew that Eddie was in trouble.  Instead of going to school that day, I went to the spot he said he was going.  Turning the corner down the alley, I felt something was...off.  What happened next would scar me for the rest of my life.  I will never get the image out of my head when I looked behind that dumpster.  My face turned white, and I felt like the entire world stopped when I saw his body laying there on the ground in a pool of blood.  Even to this day, I still see that image sometimes.  Something like that, a 12 year old should never have to imagine.

  1. I had to comment on this, because it is a quote from one of my favorite movies, and I thought your interpretation was very well-written! I enjoyed the irony that the friend who liked playing detective ended up being the one who was killed. Also, this is a good quote to use as a monologue, as that is how it is used in "Stand by Me", and I think you did a great job setting the scene and being authentic to your prompt.
